Tutorial…Saturday: Suit Dust Jackets

June 16, 2012

So, a little while ago my husband and I were walking through The Container Store (which I LOVE) and we saw these little shoulder protectors for suits. They are designed to slip over the hanger and keep dust from collecting on your nice suits. I thought they were a great idea, but just looked blah. (Not to mention they were $10 a piece for some plastic!) Then the light bulb went off! I could make my own and choose whatever fabric I’d like to use! Then I could guarantee that they wouldn’t look blah!

Here’s what you need to make yours:

1/3 yard fabric

Template (Download here, making sure the 1″ boxes print at 1″.) Cut out and piece the two pages together, matching the dashed line. It should look like this when it’s done:

Take the fabric, unfold it, and fold each selvage in towards the middle.

Cut two of the template, lining up the pattern on each folded edge.

Using your machine, make a 1″ button hole approximately 3/4″ down from the center top of one piece.

Place your two pieces right sides together and sew together the top curve using a 1/4″ seam. (Leave the straight bottom open.)

Finish the hem however you’d like. A small 1/4″ hem would work. A blind him, rolled hem, or even a serged edge would work fine.

To use, just slide hangar through buttonhole, and adjust the rest of the cover over the shoulders of the suit. Looks WAY better, don’t you think?

Design Tip: Try adding a monogram to the front to really add a nice custom touch! These would make a great graduation gift or Father’s Day present! Best part is that you can do an entire custom set in under an hour!!

Happy Sewing,

Erin
