Tutorial Tuesday: Patriotic Foiled Napkins

July 3, 2012

Today we’re getting ready for July 4th by foiling some fabric napkins! It’s sooo easy! I promise! I made my own napkins for this project. Pre-made ones from the store will work just fine too!

Here’s what you’ll need:

Heat’n Bond Ultra Hold (Any double sided fabric adhesive will work, just make sure it’s washable!)

Silver Foil designed specifically for fabric

Iron

Napkins to foil (I made mine by cutting some squares and using my serger to make a rolled hem on the edges. Next time I think I’ll use red and navy thread instead of the white thread though!)

Let’s get going!

Cut out some star shapes from the Heat’n Bond. Freehand the stars, or trace from an image online. For some of my shapes I freehanded it, and some of them I used a star hole punch.

With the paper still ON and facing UP (so it’s touching your iron), iron the stars to your napkin, wherever you’d like them to be. Ironing it on should only take 3-4 seconds.

Once it’s cooled, remove the paper,

place your foil on top, then iron over the foil over your star shapes.

When it’s completely COOL, remove the foil sheet. If you don’t wait until it’s cooled, it will just pull off your adhesive, instead of the foil sticking to your adhesive. Continue ironing the foil onto your stars one or two at a time until finished. Remember to only remove the paper backing when you’re ready to iron on the foil. (If you accidentally iron over a shape that’s had the paper removed, but has no foil on top, it’ll get adhesive goop all over your iron.)

I got the zig zag strip by using some decorative scissors and cutting a strip of the Heat’n Bond then ironing it on as shown above. Think of all the fun shapes you could make with them!

Washing instructions:

Even though we used a permanent fabric adhesive you’ll need to be careful when washing. Wash on a gentle cycle and let it air dry!

Happy Independence Day!
